These days more and more people are opting for wireless home security systems. These tend to be less expensive than hard wired versions and they are more versatile. A wired home security system is perfect for those who are good with home projects and DIY or Do It Yourself affairs.
To install a wireless security system, you will need a few basic tools and your wireless home security kit which typically comes with the main control module, window and door sensors, motion sensors and a siren.
The first thing you need to do is to plan. You have to figure out where to put the control panel. It should be placed in a central location with easy access. It should be near an outlet, but away from any appliances and fixtures that could block radio frequencies, e.g. TV’s, stereos, and microwave ovens. Many people choose to place the control panel next to the door, as a matter of convenience. Do be sure that wherever you do choose to install the panel that it is not easily visible from the outside, i.e. away from windows as you don’t want burglars scoping out your home security system before hand.
Next, figure out where you want to install your security sensors. Also, choose a place to put your alarm siren; it shouldn’t be placed in an obvious area, but still, make sure it won’t be muffled or blocked in some way.
Once you’ve finished your planning you can go ahead and install the main home security panel. This should be installed at a comfortable height and remember you need an outlet nearby to connect the system so that it works properly. Consider running the wire through the wall by drilling holes behind the control panel and below the outlet. This will prevent anyone from easily tampering or dismantling your system by pulling out the plug. If you are installing a wireless home security system with monitoring, you also need to connect the panel to a phone line; here, you may require help from an expert technician.
Next install the window sensors and glass break alarms. Install sensors on the main entry doors to your home. Each sensor usually consists of a magnet and a transmitter; the transmitter is attached to the edge of the window or door while you should make sure that the magnet is attached to the window or door. Consider putting a sensor on the garage door and the entry door to the garage-many thieves gain access to homes via the garage door. If you are installing infrared sensors, smoke detectors, etc, carefully read the instructions and install them with caution.
Next consult the directions for programming the dials on the siren. Usually, you can use a tab or screwdriver for setting your own home security code. Again, you’ll need to read the instructions to properly program the control panel.
The last step is to test the system. Make sure the alarm works properly and that you can hear it. Make sure the sensors are up and working without a hitch. Calibrate the components and make sure the signal strength is adequate. Consult the directions for extra help.
